IPv6 adoption: offers efficiency and limited resources

JAKARTA, December 11, 2023 – The efficiency gained from implementing IPv6 and lower migration costs are the main attractions for increasing IPv6 adoption in Indonesia, even though the remaining IPv4 resources worldwide are increasingly limited.

This is the conclusion of the IPv6 Summit 2023 panel discussion session themed Embracing IPv6 Innovation towards Intelligent Indonesia Digital Vision 2030 & 2045, organized by the Indonesian Internet of Things Association (ASIOTI) and the Directorate of Post and Information Technology, Ministry of ICT (KOMINFO), and the Asia Pacific IPv6 Council.

Director General of Post and Information Technology KOMINFO Wayan Toni Supriyanto said it takes internet Protocol (IP) technology with unlimited IP addresses to support the development of digital technology. The Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) address space must be upgraded to guarantee the connectivity of each device. "The world started this migration process several years ago, as well as in Indonesia. Currently, the process of IPv6 adoption is expected to be faster because, in the use case, the user can feel the migration process's benefits directly," he said.

Chairman of ASIOTI, Teguh Prasetya, said, "IPv6 offers more numbers and benefits ranging from end-to-end security, improved features, better connections, minimal interference, and minimal delays compared to IPv4, as well as all telecommunications devices. it currently supports IPv6." Teguh added that IPv6 is a vast resource needed to implement technologies such as autonomous cars that will be massive in the future.

I, Gede Damaryusa, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of PT XL Axiata, Tbk, assess that the adoption of IPv6 is beneficial from the operational side because of the various features provided, one of which is the maintenance of unmanned BTS (base transceiver station), thereby reducing differences—cost burden. "With IPv6 as the foundation, our applications are now diversified so that limited costs can be used for various expansions to build new businesses or portfolios," he said. Gede added, "The real benefit for XL Axiata through the implementation of IPv6 is how XL has managed to increase operational efficiency where now, as CTO, my main task is to be responsible for costs to generate revenue."

PT XL Axiata, Tbk is one of the recipients of the highest IPv6 adoption appreciation in Indonesia along with PT Telkom Indonesia, PT Cyberindo Aditama, PT Supra Primatama Nusantara, Universitas Islam Indonesia, PT PLN (Persero), and the Association of Indonesian Internet providers ( APJII), the Association of Indonesian telecommunications providers (ATSI) is the initiator of IPv6 adoption.

Meanwhile, Deputy CEO of Huawei Data Communication, Ryan Qiu, said, "Digitalization is increasingly exerting a deeper influence on people's social and economic lives. In the future, IoT in the form of smart devices, smart cities, and smart homes will be involved. The Daily Life of this technological advancement requires the support of IPv6 internet services to create optimal user benefits. In the future, introducing IPv6 will enhance high-quality capabilities, and 400GE ultra-broadband capabilities will provide a solid foundation for digital transformation. With its experience and technological advantages, Huawei can help the digital ecosystem create breakthroughs to realize digital transformation in Indonesia."

Indonesia is accelerating its efforts to develop a digital economy infrastructure related to IPv6; Indonesia is catching up in the development of IPv6 and has become the world leader in implementing forward-looking IPv6 technology. Take XL, for example; they have completed the commercial deployment of enhanced IPv6 networks. Key technologies such as SRv6, 400GE, and digital map technology are at the forefront in Indonesia and even throughout ASEAN. This will undoubtedly create a solid infrastructure foundation for developing Indonesia's digital economy.
